Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson wittingly bring to life the true untold tale about the origins of one of the most beloved Disney classics of all time. John Lee Hancock directs this critically acclaimed and commercially successful film, which reveals the surprising behind-the-scenes-story about the making of Mary Poppins. Determined to fulfill a promise made to his daughters, Walt Disney (Tom Hanks) desperately tries for twenty years to get the rights to author P.L. Travers’ (Emma Thompson) beloved book. Along with his iconic never ending creative vision, Walt tries in every possible way to convince her, but Travers won’t respond. Only when he reaches into his own complicated childhood does Walt discover the utmost truth behind Travers’ fears, and together, they set Mary Poppins free.
The Bottom Line
There definitely is something irresistible about a true story that is also heartwarming at the same time, and in an age when “Disney ” and Mary Poppins are such huge icons, it’s pretty easy to forget that Disney was a actually real person, and the movie that defined films musical started as a sweet little children’s novel by a not-so-famous British writer. Emma Thompson and Tom Hanks manage to deliver great performances of these lovable characters. The movie is definitely worth a watch, and audience can relate to it, to some extent.
Apart from simply being an interesting and gripping story about real people, Saving Mr. Banks also has a lot to offer in terms of it’s look. It has beautiful bright colors that are pleasing to the eye and it’s even more beautiful on Blu-ray! This is a movie which the whole family should watch, with some popcorn and cola, of course.
