The Jungle Book: Movie Review

Hey there, pixie pals! Sarah here. 😀 It has been a long time, hasn’t it? I have been busy with school, so yeah.

Anyway, I am reviewing the new movie The Jungle Book today! It released earlier where I live (April 8) than in the U.S., but I went to watch it only yesterday. Hope you enjoy reading this~

Disney revisits Mowgli the human cub and his animal buddies in the new magical Disney film, The Jungle Book. Check out Sarah Diamondswirls’ review of this live- action version of the 1967 Walt Disney animated classic of the same name. 😀

In The Jungle Book, Mowgli (Neel Sethi), the ‘man cub’, loves the family of wolves who raised him. However, he is frustrated of the fact that whenever he creates something clever to solve a problem, he is accused of creating ‘human tricks’ which his animal pals don’t like. Will one of these ‘tricks’ ever impress Mowgli’s animal friends?

Mowgli with his wolf brother

Fitting In

Mowgli, a young ‘man cub’, is brought to wolf couple Raksha ( voice of Lupita Nyong’o) and Akela  (Giancarlo Esposito) by the black panther Bagheera (voice of Sir Ben Kingsley). Mowgli is raised by the wolf couple, and is expected to behave like a wolf. He is put down whenever he solves problems by creating tools using human-like tricks. He is told that he must learn the ways of the pack.

Mowgli and Bagheera look for the human village

Peace Rock

The animals in the jungle are suffering from a severe drought, so they gather at a huge rock surrounded by the only remaining water. No animal is eating another animal, because a ‘Water Truce’ is in effect. Shere Khan, a scary and enormous Bengal tiger (voice of Idris Elba) comes to the rock and smells the human cub Mowgli. The tiger’s face was burnt by a human torch once, so he hates all men. Mowgli must be given to him by the end of the Water Truce, or many will perish.

Shere Khan smells Mowgli

Saying Goodbye

Mowgli volunteers to leave on his own, and it is decided that Bagheera will guide him to the human village. Shere Khan, however, stops the duo on their way, and Mowgli escapes alone. Deep in the jungle, he encounters the giant python Kaa (voice of Scarlett Johansson). Kaa is aware of the fact that Mowgli’s father was killed by the tiger, and he was an infant when Bagheera discovered him. She shows the boy a vision explaining the beauty and destructive powers of fire, or ‘Man’s Red Flower’. Just as Kaa is about to capture Mowgli and eat him up, he is rescued by the huge bear, Baloo (Bill Murray).

Mowgli meets Kaa

Fetching Honey

In return for saving his life, Baloo asks Mowgli to fetch him honey from honeycombs which are situated on a high cliff. Mowgli uses human inventive ingenuity to fetch the honey. The bear and the boy become friends. Mowgli will leave when winter arrives.

Mowgli and Baloo take a swim

Back To The Jungle

Shere Khan is furious when he hears that the wolf pack has let Mowgli leave. He tells them that once he returns, Mowgli must be turned over to him. While looking for Mowgli, Bagheera finds him with Baloo, and feels a little sad when the boy says that he wants to stay with the bear.

Mowgli rescues a baby elephant from a deep pit using ‘human tricks’ , and wins the elephants’ trust. However, Mowgli is soon grabbed by a group of monkeys who take him to their leader, King Louie (Christopher Walken), who is a huge orangutan and believes that Mowgli, being a human, knows how to make fire. To King Louie, fire means power.

Mowgli and King Louie

To the Rescue

Bagheera and Baloo co-operate to save Mowgli, killing King Louie in the process. Mowgli, however, feels very angry when he gets to know about what Shere Khan has done to the wolf pack, and the fact that Bagheera and Baloo didn’t tell him about it also angers Mowgli. He goes off to a human village and steals the red flower- a lit torch. On his way back to the jungle to confront Shere Khan, Mowgli accidentally sets a huge fire to the forest.

What Now?

Will Mowgli confront Shere Khan? Will the fire be put out? Will his animal friends accept him?

Mowgli with Bagheera

Wrapping Up

This new version of The Jungle Book is a treat for the eyes. It is beautiful to look at, with the 3D only adding to the experience. The animation is amazing, with the CGI animated animals looking extremely believable. Why, they look completely real!

Idris Elba voices Shere Khan

Newcomer Neel Sethi is great as Mowgli, and so are the voice actors: Bill Murray as the funny bear Baloo, Idris Elba as the enormous tiger Shere Khan, and all the others.

Lupita Nyong’o voices Raksha

The usual Disney themes of friendship and believing in yourself are present, but not laid on too thickly. The songs are great, too.

It doesn’t matter if you don’t love the earlier version of The Jungle Book, or aren’t a fan of Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book. This movie is an absolute treat to watch, so yes- it is a must-watch!

Christopher Walken as King Louie and Scarlett Johansson voices Kaa

Powerful Disney Girls

Original post: Who Runs The World? Disney Women.

Disney women are creative, brave, bold, and independent. They dream big, stand up for what’s right, and work hard to finish what they start. Their persuasion can build a nation (made of ice, or otherwise); their courage, kindness, and strength shines through them. Basically, they’re super powerful and this is our tribute to their unstoppable spirits.

Belle, Beauty and the Beast

Belle wanted adventure in the great wide somewhere, and she found it in the most unexpected place—an enchanted castle full of magic and mystery. The path to her happy ending wasn’t what she was thought it would be, but ultimately, Belle saved the Beast and her father, and thanks to her courageous spirit, found much, much more than her previously provincial life.

Miss Bianca, The Rescuers

Don’t let her gentle, pretty voice fool you: Miss Bianca is a trooper. Oftentimes, she’s the brave one, helping Bernard keep his anxiety at bay so they can work to rescue Penny. She goes up against diamond-hungry villains, giant alligators, and more, all in the name of rescuing an orphan. If that’s not powerful, we don’t know what is.

Fa Mulan, Mulan

Mulan is a total boss. Like Belle, she’s protective of her family, and will stop at nothing to make sure they are safe. Not only did she become an awesome fighter, she found a new strength and purpose within herself.

Megara, Hercules

Quick-witted, clever Meg is one of the coolest girls around. She’s smart, keeps Hercules on his toes, and has the strength to take chances (even after her heart has been broken).

Lady Kluck, Robin Hood

You don’t want to mess with Lady Kluck (we’d understand if you chickened out of an archery match with her). She’s always one step ahead of potential threats and has no time for fowl play.

Cinderella, Cinderella

Can you carry two baskets of laundry and balance a tea tray on your head? Cinderella somehow managed to run a whole household on her own while caring for the most demanding step family ever (and a mischievous cat). More impressive? She never compromised her beliefs of being kind to others and staying true to herself.

Nala, The Lion King

Sarabi raised Simba from cub to brave lion, but without the urging of Nala he may have never returned to Pride Rock to defeat Scar and restore peace and justice to the savannah. Nala believed in Simba before he believed in himself. Nala, you’re the real MVP.

Tiana, The Princess and the Frog

Tiana worked tirelessly to pursue her dream of becoming a chef and owning a restaurant. The whole turning-into-a-frog thing causes a bit of a detour, but in the end she achieves her goal because she never gives up.

Kala, Tarzan

Dastardly leopards are no match for Kala. When she finds baby Tarzan and pledges to care for him, species no longer matters, he’s her son and she’ll protect him with all her might.

Merida, Brave

Merida is known for being free-spirited and following her own path, rather than conforming to tradition. She runs into many challenges, but uses her problem-solving skills to make things right. Plus, she’s a pro at archery, horse riding, and (eventually) weaving tapestries; a Highland triple-threat.

Kanga, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh

Kanga doesn’t just act as a mom for little Roo, she’s a matronly figure for the everyone in the Hundred Acre Wood. A shining beacon of guidance and warmth, she always seems to have the best advice (and pretty flowers, too).

Pocahontas, Pocahontas

Pocahontas is independent and thinks for herself. She’s willing to stand up for what she believes in and follows her heart. Even in the face of turmoil, she strives for peace and courageously speaks up when something doesn’t seem right.

Sarabi, The Lion King
Under Scar’s evil reign, Sarabi stays strong and leads the pride of lions, helping them press on. Even when hope seemed lost, Sarabi never gave up.

Lady, Lady and the Tramp

Lady is more than just a cute pup face. She cares about her people-family, and will go to any lengths (be them only to the end of her leash) to defend them. Evil rats are no match for her ferocity.

Rapunzel, Tangled

For a girl who has been locked in a tower her whole life, Rapunzel has impressive wisdom and street smarts. Wielding her trusty frying pan, she ventures out into a world she’s only imagined from the confines of her walls. She is willing to take chances and finally achieves her dream of seeing the floating lanterns gleam!

Wendy Darling, Peter Pan

Wendy is the voice of reason in situations where reason and logic are otherwise entirely lost. When her brothers attempt to join a pirate gang, she is quick to step in and remind them of the flaws of this plan. Who runs the ship? Wendy.

Anna and Elsa, Frozen
These sisters really do run the world (kingdom) of Arendelle. With the power of love they made it through even the coldest winter.

Nani and Lilo, Lilo and Stitch
Nani and Lilo have their differences, but they overcome them because they know that family, ohana, is what really matters. When it comes to outsmarting alien overlords, you have to stick together.

Mrs. Potts, Beauty and the Beast
Behind every Beast is a great tea pot. Mrs. Potts makes sure everything runs smoothly around the castle, and is the only object Brave enough to tell Beast the truth, even when he doesn’t want to hear, gets angry, and does some serious yelling. An all-around powerful and awesome Disney lady … err, lady-turned-teapot-turned-lady.

Marie, Aristocats
Marie keeps everyone around her in check. She can hold her own in a fight and is quick to tell her rambunctious siblings what’s what.

Maid Marian, Robin Hood
Sugar, spice, and everything nice is a good description for the kind fox, Maid Marian. When little children sneak through her gate, instead of shooing them away she just steals some cuddles and kisses. She knows that kindness gives you strength.

Jane Porter, Tarzan
Jane was in for a bit of a culture shock when she traveled from familiar, orderly surroundings to the middle of the jungle. Fortunately, her curious and open-minded nature meant she could handle anything that came her way. (Even a pack of cute little baby gorillas.)

Ariel, The Little Mermaid
Ariel’s imagination is as vast and deep as the ocean. Her keen curiosity and thirst for adventure led her to land, legs, and a life of proper cutlery usage.

Cinderella: Movie Review

Hello, Pixie Pals! Sarah Diamondswirls here. 😀

I am extremely sorry for such a late review. Actually, the movie released on the 20th of March in the place where I live and I went to watch it just yesterday. So, without further procrastination, I present to you the review of Disney’s latest live-action version of Cinderella.

Ella’s malicious step-mother and step-sisters dub her ‘Cinder’ella because they have converted the once well-off beauty into their slave. She now has to sleep by the fireplace to get warm, wears filthy clothes and gets only a few crumbs of food to eat. How long can Ella hang in?

Cinderella bids goodbye to her father

Cinderella bids goodbye to her father

Happy Childhood No More Happy

Young Ella (Lily James) lives in a huge mansion with her doting mom (Hayley Atwell) and successful traveling salesman dad (Ben Chaplin).  When mom passes away, dad re-marries and yes, you guessed it right- the step-mother is really evil! She is Lady Tremaine (Cate Blanchett) who can only think about herself and her snobby daughters Anastasia (Holiday Grainger) and Drizella (“Downton Abbey’s” Sophie McShera). When Ella’s dad also passes away on a business trip, she has to let go of her posh room and all the comforts and luxuries she previously enjoyed. The girl is now moved to the servants’ quarters as her step-mom lets the domestic help go.

Lady Tremaine

Lady Tremaine

Meanwhile, At the Palace

A young, handsome prince (Richard Madden) called “Kit” by his dad the king (Derek Jacoby) is struggling with his ailing dad’s command that he should marry soon and to royalty in order to secure the throne. While he goes for hunting and riding into the woods, he meets Cinderella who has ridden there to escape her awful life. She insists he not kill a deer and wins his heart before riding away not having given him her name.

The King with his son whom he calls 'Kit'

The King with his son whom he calls ‘Kit’

Why Can’t I Go?

Hoping to meet the girl in the woods again, Kit asks the King to organize a grand ball where he would choose his bride and invite all maidens of the kingdom- rich and poor alike. Lady Tremaine is confident that the prince would choose one of her own daughters. Ella cannot buy a new gown so she re-designs her mom’s old one, only to be laughed at. She thus can’t attend the ball and is left at home- miserable and heartbroken.

Costumes for the ball

Costumes for the ball

Fairy Godmother to the Rescue

Ella’s mom always believed in fairy godmothers, and Ella’s misery summons hers (played by Helena Bonham Carter). And of course, you know the rest: Pumpkin carriage, a duck for a driver and lizards as footmen. Also, a lovely ball gown and gorgeous glass slippers, and of course, the ‘be home by the final stroke of midnight’!

Cinderella with her fairy godmother

Cinderella with her fairy godmother

The Ball, the Plan, The Search

Ella blows away everyone at the ball, especially the prince. Everything goes perfectly: They dance, they fall in love and the glass slipper gets left on the steps. The prince starts searching for the owner of the shoe while stepmom hatches a plan with an evil Grand Duke (Stellan Skarsgard) to make sure that no matter who the price marries, she and her daughters be well off and Ella will get nowhere near her own slipper! Will fate bypass all the evil plotting and give Ella her prince? What do you think?

Lady Tremaine and Grand Duke plot

Wrapping Up

Barring a little added evilness from the stepmom and a palace official, the rest of the original Classic Disney Story remains intact, and so we get to see live-action counterparts of characters like Gus Gus the adorable mouse and Lucifer the stalking cat. Watching animals turn into carriage drivers and footmen is a treat for the eye with modern CGI techniques that make the after midnight race for home a delight for the audience.

Lily James makes a very sympathetic Cinderella and you immediately connect with her.  She and prince actor Richard Madden do actually seem to be falling in love. Ella takes her horrible demotion to a servant after her dad’s death with grace and a smile on her face and it’s a really long time before she finally speaks up for herself. In modern times, you might expect her to freak out and say, “There’s no way I would do all your dirty work! Get someone else!”. But what strikes me is  that she doesn’t expect the prince to save her, and literally tells him, ‘I’m poor but I can get away from it myself”. Girl power all the way!

Cinderella is beautiful even as a maid

Cinderella is beautiful even as a maid

Academy Award-winning actress Cate Blanchett does a remarkable job as the greedy stepmom who lost everything before she married Ella’s dad and doesn’t intend to let it happen again. She portrays just the right combination of pride and evilness without seeming monotonous. Stepsisters are silly more than evil.  Helena Bonham Carter’s fairy godmother is just edgy enough to be cool. The moral this time is that you should be courageous and kind no matter what comes your way and everything shall be fine.

Fairy Godmother

Fairy Godmother

Along with the film in the theaters we also catch the animated-short Frozen Fever in which Anna’s frosty elder sister Elsa and buddies plan an extravaganza birthday party for her which turns silly and sort of ugly when Elsa catches a bad cold and her many sneezes turn into….well, snot people (no worries, they are cute!). Even though it doesn’t match the feat of Disney’s Frozen, Frozen fans will nevertheless be delighted, and the short film is real fun.

Elsa wakes up Anna on the morning of her birthday

Elsa wakes up Anna on the morning of her birthday

Overall, Cinderella is an attempt at modernizing the original Cinderella tale. It’s good enough for young audiences to identify with the characters. You should watch it for some great performances from the actors, and also for Frozen fever.

Tinker Bell and the Legend of The NeverBeast: Blu-Ray Review

Hey there, Pixie Pals!

Sarah Diamondswirls here. 😀

The much anticipated Disney’s Tinker Bell and The Legend of The Nevrbeast is finally out on Blu- Ray and DVD. Check out my review of the newest installment of the Tinker Bell movie franchise! 😀

Tink’s buddy, Fawn, who is an Animal fairy, is always rescuing animals in need of a helping hand (or wing? 😉 ), even if it means danger for Pixie Hollow. When she discovers a giant, dangerous, furry critter with really huge teeth, the only thing she notices is the fact that the poor animal has a thorn in his foot. Will our favorite Animal fairy’s determination to save this beast destroy everything and everyone Fawn loves?

Fawn tries to tell Tink about her new animal friend

The Bottom Line

In the magical forest grove of Pixie Hollow, Fawn (voice of Ginnifer Goodwin) is busily (and secretly) nursing a baby hawk back to health. This bad because hawks eat fairies (what? O.O). Fawn is, however, discovered by the protector scout Nyx (Rosario Dawson) and Queen Clarion (Angelica Huston) and given a good scolding for recklessly looking after dangerous animals that pose a potential threat to the fairies.

Fawn gets a scolding from Nyx

Fawn gets a scolding from Nyx

When a comet passes throw Pixie Hollow, bringing a greenish light, growls and roars are heard coming from deep forests. Fawn manages to discover the source : an enormous, furry and dangerous creature with awfully teeth and spooky green eyes. Guess what? This discovery doesn’t make Fawn nervous or scared but, yet again, concerened. The reason why this big guy is yelling is that he has a huge thorn stuck in his paw. Looks like or dear Fawn nurses a soft spot for animals: big or small, timid or loud, harmless or…dangerous.

Tink sees the green comet

Tink sees the green comet

Fawn carefully removes the thorn and befriends the NeverBeast, whom she lovingly names Gruff. She also helps him with his mysterious building of four high towers of rock- a thing which he does day and night. When Nyx discovers an ancient prophecy which claims that a comet will wake a dormant NeverBeast who will grow horns and wings and finally destroy Pixie Hollow, Fawn must, along with her fairy friends- Silvermist (Lucy Liu), Iridessa (Raven Symone) , Rosetta (Megan Hilty), Vidia (Pamelsa Adlon) and Tinker Bell (Mae Whitman), prove that Gruff in fact is a good guy who has no intentions of destroying Pixie Hollow, but, in fact, of saving it.

NeverBeast frolics with fairy friends

NeverBeast frolics with fairy friends

Special Features

Five Essential Ingredients to getting Gruff – is the “making of video” featuring filmmakers discussing the design, story development, sound (including Gruff’s roar comprised of a cat, camel, dog, llama and hyena…together!). There are snippets of the voice actors voicing the characters, as well as an introduction to the making of the animation of Gruff. (So much fur!)

My Dad’s Movie: The Story of the NeverBeast – features director Steve Loder’s little daughter explaining how her dad grew up without any pets at home (and he is terrified of dogs!). She, on the other hand, is fond of all sort of creatures. The bigger, the better. On a dad/daughter trip to the Santa Barbara Zoo, they feed giraffes and elephants. Aww! 😀

Jeff Corwin’s Guide to Real World NeverBeasts – features conservationist Jeff Corwin introducing real life, weird and wacky-looking animals like, the star-nosed mole, Aye Aye Lemur, Red-lipped fish (really looks like “she” is wearing lipstick), the mantis shrimp and a lot more. This, personally, was my favorite part!

Fawn has fun with her animal friends

Fawn has fun with her animal friends

Deleted Scenes – some semi- animated or missing  scenes with the director telling us why they were cut. Watch out for a bunch of cute scenes which will make you go ‘Aww!’

All About Animals – In this song, Fawn teaches her fellow pixie pals (and us) all about different groups of animals and what they are called. Ginnifer Goodwin sings and she’s pretty good.

Gruff Love – is a little trailer featuring our favorite beast- the huge and lovable Gruff.

Wrapping Up

The Legend of The Neverbeast is an ambitious film featuring tons of cool visual effects like green comets, clouds with lightning and stuff. Loads of colorful hues are used as NeverBeast battles a supernatural storm.

Fawn, voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin, is her usual spunky and cool self. If you are a huge Tink fan and watch this film just for the Tinker fairy, then keep your expectations low. This film is really about Fawn and her furry friend Gruff.

Ginnifer Goodwin voices Fawn

Ginnifer Goodwin voices Fawn

Another notable change is Fawn’s unusual makeover. The Animal fairy is, in no way, similar to her previous self in terms of appearance. She is all glammed up.

For your information, there is no mention of the back story behind Fawn’s makeover. It might be possible, as Marigold suggested, that the prim and proper Rosetta took Fawn to Shelley’s Salon and forced her to have a makeover. However, it seems likely that the reason behind this change is the fact that fawn is the protagonist of this film (along with Gruff). Maybe the makers thought that as the leading character, the tomboyish fairy should look different and grab eyeballs. So, perhaps, they brought about this change to draw attention to the movie.

Like most Disney films, Tinker Bell and The Legend of The NeverBeast also has teaches certain lessons. While making a decision, listen to both your head and your heart; Don’t judge a book by its cover (or a beast by his huge teeth). Plus, the movie also has a slightly sad lesson about love and loss.

Even though Tinker Bell and the Legend of The Neverbeast isn’t a particular milestone in either storyline or animation, it definitely is worth a watch and deserves a spot in your DVD and Blu-Ray collection especially if you are a Disney Fairies fan (which we all are!).

Guess who’s playing Belle next!

Hello, Pixie Pals!

Sarah here. 😀

Months ago, I posted about the upcoming live- action version of Disney’s Beauty and The Beast.

The film will be directed by Bill Condon and produced by Mandeville Films’ David Hoberman and Todd Lieberman. Production is set to begin later this year.

Now, can you guess, who is going to play the gentle, brave and kind Belle?

Emma Watson

It’s none other than Emma Watson!

A few days ago, the actress posted her reaction to the casting news:

I can well imagine Watson in a lovely ball gown, like the one Belle wears in the 1991 animation film.

It’s Christmas time!

Hello, Fairy Friends!

Well, well, its winter already! And with winter comes cold, and with cold comes drowsiness, and with drowsiness comes hibernation- something which most of your pixie pals have gone into. 😉

Dear Fairies, do wake up, for it’s Christmas time. ^^

I never got to spend Christmas in Pixie Hollow, but since it’s closed now, we can celebrate all by ourselves. The weather outside is frigid, but inside us is warmth~ because of our friendship.

To celebrate this bond of ours, we are having a special Christmas Re-union! Click here to know more.

Something I would love to have for Christmas, is Pixie Hollow. How I miss it! 😮

But something I would like better would be all of us to come together. That is not impossible, is it?

And, here is something lovely I found (By Alfred Tennyson) :

Ring out, wild bells, to the wild sky,

The flying cloud, the frosty light.

The year is dying in the night;

Ring out, wild bells, and let him die.

The year is dying in the night;

Ring out, wild bells, and let him die.

Ring out the old; ring in the new.

Ring, happy bells, across the snow.

The year is going; let him go.

Ring out the false; ring in the true.

The year is going; let him go.

Ring out the false; ring in the true.

Ring in the valiant men and free,

The larger heart, the kindlier hand.

Ring out the darkness of the land;

Ring in the Christ that is to be.

Ring out the darkness of the land;

Ring in the Christ that is to be.

So, have you made your Christmas wishlist yet? Tell us about it in a comment, below.

Take Care!
